Pricing, explained
How much does an answering service cost for pest control?
Somewhere between $80 and $1,700 a month, depending on who answers, how you're billed, and how many calls come in. Here's what actually moves that number, what real providers charge, and where a flat $187/mo AI receptionist with a CRM built in fits against all of it.
The short answer
- Human-staffed answering services (per-minute or tiered): roughly $250–$1,725/mo before setup fees and overage.
- AI voice agents billed per call or per caller: roughly $79–$500+/mo, with the same overage risk once you cross your cap.
- None of the above include a CRM — the call gets answered, but there's still nowhere for the job, the treatment history, or the next quarterly date to live.
- Tradework Labs: $187/mo flat for the AI voice and chat receptionist plus the CRM, unlimited calls, same price in January and swarm season.
Before the numbers
What actually sets the price
"Answering service" covers a wide range of setups, and the price swings just as wide. Five things decide where you land.
Who actually answers
A live person costs more per minute than an AI does, because you're paying for someone's time on the line, not just compute. That's most of the gap between a $250 human plan and a $79 AI plan.
How you get billed
Per-minute, per-call, or per-caller — three different meters on the same thing. Every one of them turns a slow month into savings and a busy month into a bigger invoice.
Real 24/7 vs. business hours
True around-the-clock coverage costs more to staff than 9-to-5. Some plans quietly hand nights and weekends to voicemail unless you pay for the upgrade.
Setup and overage fees
Some services charge $50 just to turn the line on, then bill $1.67 to $3.00 more per minute or call once you're past your plan's cap — exactly when a swarm season or a good ad push has you the busiest.
Whether a CRM comes with it
None of the plans below include one. The call gets answered and logged as a message — booking the job, tracking the treatment, and remembering the customer next time still happens somewhere else, if it happens at all.
What real providers charge

The part the price tag skips
Answering the phone isn't running the shop
Every option above solves one problem: someone, or something, picks up. None of them know that the caller is due for a quarterly re-service, that their WDO report is still pending, or that they called about a rat in the attic last spring. That still lives in a CRM — one you buy, log into, and keep updated separately.
Add a CRM subscription to any of the plans above and the "cheap" option stops looking so cheap. That's the gap Tradework Labs is built to close: the receptionist and the CRM are the same system, not two bills and two logins.
Where Tradework Labs fits
One flat price, no meter to watch
- AI voice receptionist and AI web chat, both included — not billed per minute, per call, or per caller.
- A real CRM behind it, so every call becomes a customer record with job and treatment history attached.
- Trained on pest specifics — termite vs. liquid treatment, WDO urgency, quarterly tiers — not a generic script.
- A real person tunes it with you every month. No call-flow logic to maintain yourself.

Common questions
Quick answers
Is an AI answering service actually cheaper than a human one?
Usually, but not automatically. Goodcall and Smith.ai both still charge overage once you're past your monthly cap, the same as the human-staffed plans. The real savings against a live-staffed service comes from AI generally costing less per call to run — not from AI being free of tiers and caps.
What happens to the bill during pest season, when call volume spikes?
Every metered plan above — per-minute, per-call, or per-caller — charges more once you cross the plan cap. If swarm season or a mosquito outbreak doubles your inbound calls, a per-minute or per-call bill can double right along with it.
Do I still need to buy a CRM on top of any of these?
With every option above, yes. An answering service or a standalone AI voice agent takes the call and logs a message or syncs a note into a CRM you already run — it doesn't come with one. You're paying for the phone to get answered, then paying again (in software or in your own time) to actually run the business the call generated.
